The Deutsche Afrika-Linien/John T. Essberger Group of Companies began in the year 1924 and was conceived by former Royal Officer, Commander John Theodor Essberger with the hope of establishing himself as a tanker ship owner in Hamburg.
Today the shipping group is made up of the Deutsche Afrika-Linien providing traditional shipping services to Southern Africa, East Africa and the Islands of the Indian Ocean, and John T.Essberger with its chemical tanker, dry cargo and ship management divisions.
